Intern Chronicles: Quinn Menger

While she now studies law at the University of Mississippi, ESPN Legal Intern Quinn Menger has spent much of her life on the volleyball court, most recently helping the Penn State volleyball team win the NCAA championship in 2024.

Growing up in Richmond, Virginia, Menger has been immersed in the game since she was 7 years old.

“Both of my parents coached volleyball when I was a kid. I did other sports but there was nothing that quite compared to [volleyball] and the young women I was surrounded by, so I drew to it naturally,” said Menger, a defensive specialist at Penn State.

Her childhood dream was to play volleyball as a Nittany Lion.

“College athletics are so difficult and so rewarding at the same time . . . However, to be able to chase a childhood dream and fulfill it to the fullest extent, I wouldn’t trade anything for the world.”

That title came with a story worth knowing.

Not only was this the program’s first championship in a decade, with Menger at the helm as captain, but the team was coached by former Nittany Lion player and 2025 ESPY winner Katie Schumacher-Cawley.  

She was the first female coach to win an NCAA Division I women’s volleyball title. Schumacher-Cawley did it all while undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer throughout the 2024 season. The winner of the 2025 ESPYS Jimmy V Award for Perseverance never missed a practice or match.

Menger credits Schumacher-Cawley for always pushing her to “be the best version of [herself], not just a volleyball player,” modeling resilience, strength and care every step of the way.

Those lessons help Menger in her role as an ESPN Legal Intern. 

Working out of the Bristol campus, Menger drafts agreements, sits in on programming and production deals and works on projects for ESPN’s Original Content team.  

Quinn isn’t the only intern in this class to have won an NCAA volleyball championship.

Tatum Thomas, Social Content Intern, is a recent graduate from Texas A&M University, who helped the Aggies claim their first-ever NCAA volleyball championship title this past December.
