ESPN at the NAHJ Excellence In Journalism (EIJ) Conference

At the Noche de Periodistas NAHJ Journalism Awards, ESPN and ESPN Deportes landed four awards: The Presidential Award for Excellence to ESPN for One NaciÃ³n; Series - Multimedia Award for The Fight of the Century on ESPN Deportes Digital; Presentation/Design - Multimedia Award for Cuba - ESPN Digital; and the Elaine Rivera Civil Rights & Social Justice Award - ESPN The Magazine, â€œWhile the World Watched." ESPN was once again part of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Excellence in Journalism (EIJ) Conference that took place Sept. 18-20 in Orlando, Fla. The company was well-represented by a dozen employees who participated in panel discussions, recruited potential colleagues and took part on a special candidate reception hosted by GOAL!, the companyâ€™s Hispanic/Latino ERG. The Noche de Periodistas NAHJ Journalism Awards. ESPN also took part on the NAHJ Career Fair with a recruiting booth that was staffed with employees across departments. They provided career counsel and advice while sharing information on opportunities at ESPN. ESPN's Executive Vice President, Digital and Print Media, John Kosner (seated at right), and Editor-In-Chief, espnW, Alison Overholt (seated second from right) discussed diversity in the newsroom today and the importance of improving the coverage of minorities. Hugo Balta, senior director of multimedia content for ESPN, moderated two panels that touch on the challenges of covering the Latino community, how to ensure their stories are told and their voices are heard, and the importance of improving diversity within the Latino community. ESPN also sponsored a workshop session about sports coverage and multicultural audiences. The session had the participation of (R-L) Ignacio Garcia, coordinating producer for ESPN Deportes and International; Max Bretos, SportsCenter anchor; Antonietta â€œToniâ€ Collins, commentator for ESPN Digital; and Jaime Vega-Curry, editor for ESPN Deportes Digital, who discussed and shared insight on the importance of storytelling and engagement with diverse audiences.
