What struck me then is even more amazing now, after the horse has captivated millions by winning the Triple Crown – the anonymity. Aside from trainer, Bob Baffert, the groom handling the bathing, and a small collection of reporters gazing from afar, no one was around. Literally a few feet away is the busy Hempstead Turnpike, and right beyond the grassy area where American Pharoah had his bath and behind a row of hedges and a fence was some anonymous deli and grill.
